Heidi, who was married to stylist Ric Pipino from 1997 to 2002, started a relationship with Italian businessman Flavio Briatore in March 2003. Seal, who had a troubled childhood and was raised by a foster family, resolved to become a good father figure. He was only willing to take the responsibility of the unborn child and later, Heidi and Seal came to an agreement with Flavio to let Seal be the father figure of Leni. Heidi later clarified that Flavio is in no way involved in the life of Leni and also stated emphatically that “Seal is Leni’s father.” Seal later praised Flavio for maintaining distance from Leni and for not disrupting her life. According to sources, Flavio used to speak to Leni everyday over phone when the girl had grown up a bit.
