Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán Salazar is a Mexican fashionista and businesswoman. She is best known as the daughter of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, the erstwhile head of the Sinaloa Cartel. Alejandrina spent the early years of her life in relative obscurity. In October 2012, several news outlets reported that a pregnant woman claiming to be Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán Salazar was detained in California after trying to illegally cross the US-Mexico border. A shrewd entrepreneur, she took advantage of her father’s legacy and set up a clothing line, as well as ‘El Chapo’ beer. She gained recent media attention following her marriage with Édgar Cázares, the nephew of another crime heavyweight Blanca Margarita Cazares.
Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán Salazar’s Early Life & Family
Alejandrina was born in 1986 in Mexico to Joaquín Guzmán and his first wife Alejandrina María Salazar Hernández. While he was still an adolescent, Alejandrina’s father got the nickname “El Chapo” because of his short (1.68 metres or 5 ft 6 in) stature and bulky physique. She was one of the 11 children of El Chapo and had three full brothers, Cesar Guzman Salazar, Ivan Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar. However, Cesar was killed at some point in 2012.
Throughout the years, her father, who was widely regarded as the most powerful drug trafficker in the world, has been arrested and then escaped captivity multiple times. Ultimately, he was apprehended by the Mexican authorities in January 2016 and later extradited to the USA, where he is presently imprisoned for life at ADX Florence in Colorado. Before his arrest, he had groomed Alejandrina’s brothers, Ivan and Jesús, to be his successors. Touted to be Joaquín’s favourite sons, they have since established control over the Sinaloa Cartel.
Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán Salazar’s Alleged Illegal Border Crossing
In October 2012, a woman claiming to be Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán Salazar was apprehended at the San Ysidro border crossing between Mexico and the USA and was subsequently charged with fraud and misuse of visas. She told the US authorities that she was the daughter El Chapo, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and one of the wealthiest men in the world of crime, and that she was six months pregnant. She also stated that she came to the USA to have her child in Los Angeles. Later, one of her attorneys mentioned to the media that she was a doctor.
Following her appearance in federal court in Los Angeles, she submitted a guilty plea and was given the sentence of the time she had already spent in the custody of the US authorities. She was then deported back to Mexico.
Some discrepancies have been noted with this incident. Both the prosecutors and her defence attorneys refused to acknowledge that she was indeed the daughter of El Chapo. At the time, the incident garnered national attention. While Forbes reported that she was 29 years old, Reuters and other news outlets revealed her age to be 31. Either way, she could not be Alejandrina, the daughter of El Chapo, whose current age, according to various sources, is 33.
Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán Salazar’s Entrepreneurial Ventures
In 2019, Alejandrina established the clothing line El Chapo 701, named after her father and his rank on Forbes’ 2009 list of the richest people in the world. In January 2020, it was reported that she was soon going to introduce a new line of beer as part of the El Chapo 701 brand. The new beer is awaiting permission from the Mexican government to be launched in the market. According to a report published by USA Today, a 12-ounce bottle of El Chapo Mexican Lager would likely to be priced at 70.10 pesos (around $3.75).
Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán Salazar’s Marriage to Édgar Cázares
On January 25, 2020, Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán Salazar exchanged wedding vows with Édgar Cázares, the nephew of Blanca Margarita Cazares, another prominent member of the Mexican criminal underworld, at the Culiacán Cathedral. Known as “The Empress”, Blanca Margarita is allegedly an influential cartel money launderer.
Security was tight around the Cathedral during the ceremony. The couple reportedly came there in a white bulletproof limo. Although her father was absent for obvious reasons, Alejandrina’s mother was there, and the two women reportedly danced together. The bride wore a white lace dress and a tiara, while the groom was dressed in a white tuxedo with a black collar and a black bow tie.
Alejandrina and Édgar previously got engaged during a ski trip. A picture of the ring was subsequently posted on Instagram. During the wedding, regular people were not allowed entry to the Cathedral, underscoring the power and importance of the Guzmán family within Sinaloa’s society. According to Falko Ernst, who serves as an analyst for the International Crisis Group, they are very much part of the elites of the city and regarded as such by other members of high society. The wedding reception was hosted at the “Big Alamo”, an estate located not far from the Cathedral. Famous Mexican band Calibre 50 and singer Julion Alvarez were present to entertain the wedding guests.
